OUR HISTORY

Kids ‘N’ Cancer: Camp Agape began in 1989 as an outreach program of the Metropolis of San Francisco Philoptochos. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Portland’s Philoptochos Society was looking to expand their outreach program in 1994. In 1995 Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Philoptochos started working closely with the Oregon Candlelighters (the parent support group for children with cancer), the Oregon Health Science University, Legacy/Emanuel Hospital and local pediatrics-oncology departments. Having the support of these community stakeholders and the Metropolis of San Francisco Philoptochos Kids ‘N’ Cancer: Camp Agape could begin to recruit families.

ABOUT US

Camp Agape of Portland is held at Camp Angelos on the Sandy River in Corbett, Oregon. Camp Agape is a family residential camp that offers a summer camp experience to cancer-afflicted children and their families. It is a special place where families have the opportunity to enjoy time away from the sights and sounds of doctors, laboratories, and hospitals, where they spend so much of their lives. Camp Agape does provide medical staff 24hours a day for the duration of camp.

Kids ‘N’ Cancer’s steering committee plans the day to day activities and menus, prepares the camp site, secures resources, materials, and funds needed to operate the week- long camp. Approximately 100 to 120 campers attend each year. The camp is held the first week in August and children from the ages of one to seventeen years old may participate. The camp provides room and board for the entire family. Shared cabin facilities along with tent sites are used for housing the families. All meals and snacks are served in the main lodge of Camp Angelos. The lodge also serves as the central gathering point for the families.
